How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT
ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find and read. When a user asks for a recommendation, it searches the web — Bing, Google and its own index — opens a handful of pages, and names the businesses those pages support. To be recommended you need to be indexed, readable by OpenAI's crawlers, present on pages that answer the buyer's exact question, and mentioned on sites ChatGPT already trusts.

Step one: make sure ChatGPT can read you
Two crawlers matter: OAI-SearchBot builds the index ChatGPT search uses, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages live during an answer. GPTBot is for training only — blocking it does nothing to your visibility, and many sites block the wrong one. Check your robots.txt, and check your firewall: Cloudflare now blocks AI crawlers by default on new domains, answering them with a 403 while every human sees the page.
ChatGPT's crawlers do not run JavaScript. A site whose text only appears after scripts run is empty to them. Server-rendered pages are read in full.
Step two: have a page for the question
ChatGPT cites pages whose titles match the question it is answering. "How much does a bookkeeper cost in Ontario" is answered from a page with that title, not from a company homepage or a 5,000-word guide. One question per page, answered in the first paragraph, with a number and its source where one exists.
For recommendation questions — "best X for Y" — ChatGPT most often cites list and comparison pages. A business's own honest "best X" list, with competitors included, was cited in a third of software answers in one 2026 study. Being at the top of such a list is what turns into a recommendation.
Step three: be mentioned elsewhere
Across 75,000 brands, the strongest correlate of AI visibility was how often the brand is mentioned on the web and on YouTube — far stronger than backlinks or domain rating. For a local business the pipes are concrete: ChatGPT licenses Yelp's reviews and ratings, Gemini reads Google Business Profile, Copilot reads Bing Places. A complete, consistent listing on each is part of being recommendable.
Step four: measure it properly
Ask the same question more than once, over weeks, on the real engine with search on. A single answer is noise. LaunchPist asks your branded questions daily and your market questions on a rolling schedule, and reports rates, not one-off screenshots.
What LaunchPist does about each step
Your site is probed as OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. A 403 is flagged with the exact fix.
The planner splits broad topics into the questions people ask and titles each in their words.
Honest "best X" and "X vs Y" pages that include the competitors ChatGPT already names.
Sitemap, RSS and IndexNow on every publish, so Bing and Google both know the page exists.
Each article is researched with web search; numbers carry their source.
Your branded questions asked every day; the first mention is emailed to you with the answer.
Questions people ask
Does ChatGPT use Bing or Google?
Both, plus its own index, as of 2026. Being indexed in Bing alone is no longer enough, and never was for Gemini or AI Overviews.
Will blocking GPTBot hurt me?
It removes you from training data, not from ChatGPT search. The crawlers that matter for recommendations are OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User.
Does llms.txt help me get recommended?
There is no evidence it does. Server-log studies in 2026 show the engines almost never fetch it. LaunchPist generates one anyway because it is free, but it is not what moves the answer.
How fast can this happen?
If your site is indexed, ChatGPT can find and describe it within days. Our guarantee is that an AI assistant names your business within seven days of connecting, or you get your money back.
