AI search optimization checklist: what actually gets a page cited in 2026
Eight things decide whether an AI assistant cites a page, in roughly this order: the assistants' crawlers can fetch it; it is indexed on Google and Bing; its title matches the question being asked; it answers that question first and stays on it; it carries specific, sourced facts; the brand is mentioned on other sites the assistant trusts; it is fresh where freshness matters; and it is measured over weeks, not once. Schema and llms.txt are not on the list.

The checklist
1. Crawler access. Allow OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User in robots.txt, and check your firewall answers them with a 200. Cloudflare blocks AI crawlers by default on new zones.
2. Server-rendered HTML. None of the assistants' crawlers execute JavaScript; only Google does.
3. Indexed on Google and Bing. ChatGPT draws on both plus its own index; nine in ten of its citations come from the general search index. Submit sitemaps to both and use IndexNow.
4. Title matches the question. Cited pages' titles are measurably closer to the prompt than uncited ones; natural-language URLs help too.
5. One question per page, answered first. Focused pages beat long guides for citations; the first passage should be quotable on its own.
6. Specific, sourced facts. Statistics with their source, direct quotations, named entities. Never a number without a page behind it.
7. Mentions elsewhere. Reviews, listings, press, YouTube. Most citations go to third-party pages; brand mentions correlate with AI visibility far more than backlinks do.
8. Measure properly. Same questions, real engines with search on, repeated over a rolling window; report rates with the answers attached.
What you can skip
Schema markup for citations (no measured lift in a 1,885-page controlled study; keep it for Google rich results). llms.txt (rarely fetched; Google ignores it). Bumping publish dates without changing content (no evidence, and a penalty risk). Blocking GPTBot to "protect" content (it is training-only and unrelated to search visibility).

Questions people ask
Where do these findings come from?
Public 2026 studies: Ahrefs' analyses of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts and 75,000 brands, Muck Rack's 25 million citations, Profound's 680 million citations, Vercel's crawler rendering study, and Google's own AI features documentation.
Is this list different for Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews lean on the Google index and show almost no freshness bias, unlike ChatGPT and Perplexity. Otherwise the same: crawlable, indexed, focused, sourced.
